Yesterday Davis Cripe would have celebrated his 19th birthday but Davis lost his life on April 26, 2017 when he was only 16 yrs old.
Davis’s death made international headlines. Davis was on lunch break from his local high school. He was able to legally purchase an energy drink from a local establishment and drink it while on his school lunch break. Shortly after lunch he returned to class. The electrical rhythm of Davis’s heart was altered and Davis suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in class. Davis had no underlying health issues.
I need to make something very clear.
Davis was a good kid with loving and caring parents. Davis’s parents DID NOT condone him drinking energy drinks. They actually discussed this topic amongst other dangers with him. This is important to mention because there has been many cruel and uneducated comments made on line questioning why Davis was allowed to even drink energy drinks. These are the type of comments that should be directed at State and Federal Government, NOT parents.
In fact every parent I have spoken with who’s child has died or suffered a serious adverse effect from an energy drinks DID NOT condone their child drinking them.
As we ALL know and ourselves have ALL been guilty of, children do not always listen to everything adults tell them. There is no way to police a child 24/7, especially once they become a teenager unless you have them locked up, and well.... that’s illegal.
There are MANY reasons why minor children should not be able to legally purchase and consume energy drinks. The American Academy of Pediatrics states “caffeine and stimulant-containing energy drinks have no place in the diet of children and adolescents.” The American Medical Association and nearly every medical and pediatric association supports a ban on the marketing of energy drinks to adolescents under the age of 18. Children and teens do not fully understand the dangers and health risks of energy drinks. YouTube is flooded with videos of kids participating in dangerous energy drink challenges you can find a few of them on our website along with additional info about energy drinks and children https://www.theawarenessproject.life/children-adolescents-energy-drinks.
Good judgment isn’t something children and teenagers can excel in, at least not yet. The rational part of a teen’s brain isn’t fully developed and won’t be until age 25 or so.
Adults think with the prefrontal cortex, the brain’s rational part. This is the part of the brain that responds to situations with good judgment and an awareness of long-term consequences. Teens process information with the amygdala which is the emotional part of their brain. It’s time to listen to medical professionals! We need to put the health and safety of our nations youth above the profits of energy drink companies.
PLEASE MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD‼️
Davis’s parents have introduced South Carolina House Bill 4352, which will ban the sale of energy drinks to children under the age of 18.
PLEASE reach out to the law makers listed in this link http://bit.ly/2HfQAML even if you don’t live in South Carolina and let them know you support this bill and find it very necessary.
